How travel can help your career

At some stage during your fifty-ish-year career journey, the thought of escaping your routine for a longer travel adventure might cross your mind. At the same time, it’s natural to wonder – will it harm your career? But trust us (and our travellers), that won’t happen.

Here are our suggestions to help you make the most of your time off whilst giving your work life a boost too…

If you’re going to switch off from work, switch off properly to get the benefits. Commuter rage, to-do lists, phone strapped to your hand at all times… Forget it all. It’ll be there when you get back. Luckily, you’ll come back with re-discovered energy and perspective, so it shouldn’t rattle you as much as it did before! If you’re like us, this will take some time to get used to. We’d recommend throwing yourself in at the deep end, by going somewhere truly off-grid asap.

If you’re going in search of creative inspirationfor your next project (if it’s good enough for Stefan Sagmeister…), explore places and cultures that are truly different from your day-to-day. Take note of what you see, what you taste, what you smell, the sounds you hear. Travel isn’t a perfectly-filtered Instagram feed – far from it, at times! – but there’s inspiration to be found everywhere. So, soak it all in.

If you intend to pick up a new skill or language that you can use when you get back (one you can turn into a freelance career, perhaps?!) carve out specific time for it and ideally early in your trip. This is a chance to jump-start your learning without the day-to-day distractions at home, so don’t leave it to chance. It’s amazing how quickly a life-changing adventure flies by, trust us.

If you’re at a career crossroads, make time to weigh things up whilst you’re away. Take note of what makes you feel most alive, the things you miss about work and the things you definitely don’t. Talk to people with different perspectives who might widen your horizons and allow yourself to dream a little. (In our experience, doing so at the same time as watching a sunset with a Caipirinha in hand seems to help…)

Do you dream about escaping your routine and going on a far-flung trip of your own? Whether it’s 3 weeks or 3 months, we’d love to help. Book in a free exploratory call here to get started.

No immediate travel plans? Why don’t you come over and join us on Instagram?
